Google’s much-awaited Android and Chrome event yesterday has finally brought the new Nexus 7 tablet to the world (officially). Despite there being little to be surprised about thanks to the overabundance of leaks related to it, the 2nd Nexus 7 is a key player in the tablet market and could shape the very basis of the budget tablet market.

For starters, the new Nexus 7 tablet comes loaded with (stock) Android 4.3 – the newest version of Android, and one that is getting launched along with the new Google tablet itself.

Its 7 inch display has an incredible 1920 x 1200 resolution, which is one step better than the ahead-of-its-time 1280 x 800 display in the first Nexus 7. It is powered by the energy-efficient but powerful 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, along with an Adreno 320 GPU and 2 GB of RAM.

On the physical side of things, the new Nexus 7 is a full 2 mm thinner than the last year’s Nexus 7 tablet, and is 50 grams lighter than its predecessor as well. It has dual stereo speakers with Fraunhofer surround sound, along with the same 1.2 MP front camera, but also a 5 MP main shooter.

One of the less publicized, but nevertheless key new features in the new Nexus tablet is that it is the very first unlocked LTE device to be compatible with the LTE offered by major US carriers such as Verizon. This marks a sea change from the traditional limitations of unlocked devices on carriers in the country, and one that could have a crucial impact on the buying decisions of customers henceforth.

The new Nexus 7 is, by all means, a rather impressive new Android tablet. At its $229 price point, it offers the kind of features that absolutely none of its competitors in a matching or even slightly greater price point can offer. Its stunning display in a 7 inch screen should be just the first of many features that give it a premium feel, despite its price point. There seems to be no reason to believe that this new Nexus 7 tablet won’t be as big a success as its predecessor, if not more!
