Reading EPUB on Kindle

More and more people are moving their reading to electronic devices such as ereaders. The Kindle continues to lead in devices sold with Amazon is reporting the sales of its Kindle devices numbering in the millions.

Of course reading ebooks purchased through Amazon is one thing but it would also be nice to expand the availability of books by looking at other formats.

What about EPUB?

One of the most dominant formats is EPUB. There are many EPUB books available for free to download from the Internet, but is it possible to read EPUB on Kindle? Fortunately, there is a piece of software that is free to download that will help. Thanks to an app called Calibre, the answer is an emphatic yes!

What is Caibre?

Let us backtrack a moment. While there are apps you may download to the new Kindle Fire to read many different formats not recognized by the native reading app, this option is not available on the older models. Nonetheless, it is still possible to read different formats on an older Kindle by converting them first – with Calibre, which is a comprehensive ebook management program.

Calibre can accept formats such as CBZ, CBR, CBC, CHM, DJVU, EPUB, FB2, HTML, HTMLZ, LIT, LRF, MOBI, ODT, PDF, PRC, PDB, PML, RB, RTF, SNB, TCR, TXT, and TXTZ. Calibre can convert these files to formats such as EPUB, FB2, OEB, LIT, LRF, MOBI, HTMLZ, PDB, PML, RB, PDF, RTF, SNB, TCR, TXT, and TXTZ. While PDF files can be rife with problems, Calibre offers a variety of options to tinker with to adjust the final output.

EPUB is emerging as a publishing standard in part because it can be edited with HTML editors. Consequently, many people have large numbers of ebooks in EPUB format in their library. Calibre helps manage these collections with a plethora of tools. Is a book missing a cover? No problem! Calibre can search from those available online, and offer you a choice of which you like best for your ebook. Perhaps more importantly, Calibre can download metadata for each book in your collection, tagging each book with useful words and phrases so you can find just the right book to suit your reading mood.

The easiest part is putting the books on your Kindle – just plug your Kindle into your computer’s USB port and wait for Calibre to recognize the device. Once it does, reading your EPUB and other format ebooks on your Kindle is as easy as selecting them, clicking the “Send to Device” button, and following the on-screen prompts. Then unplug your Kindle and start reading. It really is that easy!

i have calibre on my laptop, and i love the way it works. it can convert books to different formats and can read the most popular formats without the need to download anything else and it has its own library or storage on your hard drive, complete with metadata, cover, etc

This article is misleading, since you not only can’t download Calibre onto the Kindle Fire (it’s not in the Amazon App Store) but Calibre’s website doesn’t list a Kindle-specific version, just an Android one. Unless I missed something.
