The capable guys at Tinhte.vn found the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 at an unnamed Samsung booth and immediately took the opportunity to power it on for a hands-on session with the 0.33 inch slim tablet.
The video uploaded by Tinhte.vn includes narration in Vietnamese but you can catch words such as Honeycomb, camera, microUSB, stereo, rear camera, etc. Menu selection, pinch to zoom, auto-rotate, swiping, and moving apps are some of the features exhibited. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 looks nice and lightweight, with a solid grip. Angry Birds was played on it against the iPad 2 for comparison. The performance was fairly the same. At 0.33 inches or 8.4mm, the tab is just about 0.4mm slimmer than the iPad 2.
The last time Samsung showcased the 10.1 inch Samsung Galaxy Tab, it was safely ensconced in a box. Look but don’t touch. And it was powered off. So there was no way to check whether Samsung actually lived up to its promise of a tablet slimmer than the iPad 2. Looks like it did.
Meanwhile, as part of a brand awareness initiative, the sci-fi series “Fringe” showed the Samsung Galaxy Tab (looked like the 8.9 inch version) in the hands of Astrid towards the ends of the “Lysergic Acid Diethylamide” episode last Friday. Astrid was trying to cheer up Walter Bishop by offering him the tab (clearly held up to display Sprint) with “I downloaded Zoom for you. I can watch it with you if you like.” Unfortunately, the offer didn’t get the desired results. Maybe Walter Bishop wanted a Motorola Xoom instead.
Brand sponsors have advertized their products on the popular series Fringe before. There was the iPhone 4 doing Facetime, the HTC Evo 4G running Qik once, and several other tablets acting as medical monitors.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9 are slated to release in US in June. It’s interesting to get any dope on them. Are you waiting for these tabs?
