Ubuntu has been making waves in the tech world with their announcement of an in house Ubuntu smartphone that’s set to be launched in 2014.
In the meanwhile, they’ve just made a Developer Preview of Ubuntu Touch 12.10 available for download today!
This preview version is meant for all the major Nexus devices released in the recent past – the Samsung Galaxy Nexus & LG Nexus 4 smartphones, along with the ASUS Nexus 7 and Samsung Nexus 10 tablets.
While the current version of Ubuntu Touch available for download is quite literally a ‘preview’ (and a developer preview, that), the OS is an interesting amalgamation of Ubuntu’s own desktop avatar, with a UI that’s very similar to Android, but the multitasking is handled almost exactly the same way as the ‘Snap View’ in Windows 8.
The binaries for the Ubuntu Touch Preview are classified according to the following codenames:
• The GSM Galaxy Nexus is the ‘maguro’
• The Nexus 4 smartphone is ‘mako’
• ASUS’ Nexus 7 tablet is the ‘grouper’
• The Nexus 10 tablet is ‘manta’.
Do note that the Galaxy Nexus smartphones locked to both Sprint & Verizon do not have this preview available.
You can download the Ubuntu 12.10 Touch Preview from the official Canonical dev website.
Don’t forget to read all the instructions in the Ubuntu wiki before flashing the binaries to your Nexus tablet or phone!
