Upgraded Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi Misses Out on Movies; SD Support Coming Soon in Canada

by Vail Gladu on May 16, 2011

One of the major highlights of the Android 3.1 upgrade for Motorola Xoom and other Honeycomb tabs was the new movie rental service on Android Market. While 3G Xoom users see the Movies Tab on their Android Market interface, Wi-Fi users don’t. According to Moto support forums manager (and a few readers here), this is not a mistake. The Movies feature will come to Wi-Fi models in the “near future”.

The new Movies tab in the Android Market will not appear on updated Wi-Fi only Motorola Xoom tabs immediately after the update.  Google will make that available in the near future.

Motorola has not offered any reasons for the phased release. Could be Google’s testing the movies rental service on Motorola Xoom 3G first before releasing it for other Xoom models. The plan is to launch the service on all Android devices eventually – tabs and phones.

Meanwhile, Motorola Canada has shared some great news with Xoom users out there. Apparently, the Motorola XOOM upgrade for Canada is coming soon. Some of the feature upgrades include basic external SD card support for general SD file and media access, expanded support for USB-connected accessories, additional Bluetooth support and Picture Transfer Protocol to enable easier transfer of photo files to your PC.

Awesome! While “coming soon” could mean anything from days to months, it would be nice to see the same information shared with Xoom users in other parts of the world too. Finally, Moto is making the right moves to rationalize the cost of its 10 inch tablet.
